Pharma: Rondol at 4th International Symposium on Pharmaceutical Hot Melt Extrusion

Although a well known technology of plastic processing since the 1930s, Hot Melt Extrusion (HME) has only recently attracted attention in the Pharmaceutical Industry. Back in 2007 Rondol made the breakthrough and launched the smallest commercial twin screw extruder (10mm diameter) that allows effective trials involving very expensive active principles – 5k£ a gram - with a minimum amount of materials – 50g vs 2 kgs - This results in a substantial cost advantage for pharmaceutical materials.

The next milestone was the “fine tuning” of the extrusion process in 2008/2009 when procedures were developed to compound thermosensitive and shearsensitive active principals (APIs) into a polymer matrix.

Since then Rondol has developed a full "10mm System" that adds all possible feeding devices (powder, granules, liquid) to a variety of downtsream equipment and offers customers the possibility to manufacture medication with delayed released time in the form of tubes, tablets, films, or implants.

Evonik hosted the 4th International Symposium on HME in Frankfurt on November 9th/10th 2011 and Prof. Victoire de Margerie, Chairman of Rondol Technology, was one of the key speakers with her presentation "Downstreaming - Smart Options and Attractive Opportunities".

Prof. de Margerie states: “Hot Melt Extrusion opens the field for solid dispersions as a solution for poorly soluble drugs and Rondol Technology has been a driving actor behind this from the beginning. We will now continue to work on efficient downstream solutions for our customers so they can create better products or more efficient processes ”
